Jandy Nelson - I'll Give you the Sun

Jude and Noah are twins and artistically gifted. Both of them intend to go to a special art school, but their life collapses when their mother dies in a car accident. She was their mentor and always pushed and supported them. After she’s gone, life is not what it was before and the rest of the family slowly moves further and further apart. Noah finds relief in partying and taking risks, Jude seeks it in the arts but somehow all she creates is destroyed. She needs to find the key to get back the connection she had to her brother to be happy again.

The story is not told in chronological order, we skip backwards and forward and sometimes know that certain things happen, but we do not know why which creates a certain suspense. Otherwise this is a classic coming of age novel. Two gifted teenagers who nevertheless make mistakes and try to find out who they are and what really matters to them. It all is told through the metaphors of the arts which I really liked. The author found a way of also touching rather sensitive matters in a natural and unobtrusive way which made the novel even more valuable for me.
